Like millions of average middle-class engineering students, I left India in 2012 with a suitcase, a job offer, and absolutely no idea what I was getting into.

America was everything and nothing as I expected. We built a life. Made friends. Bought furniture. Our younger one was born there — his first words were in an accent that made my mother laugh every time she called.

Twelve years have passed. Good years. Real years.

But somewhere around year eight or nine, the question started. Not loudly at first. Just a small thing in the back of the mind during the drive to work. Do we stay? Is this home now? What are we actually building here, and for whom?

My wife and I had that conversation more times than I can count. We Googled everything. Read every forum. Asked friends who'd gone back. Asked friends who'd stayed. Everyone had an opinion. Nobody had an answer that felt like ours.
